Book Review: Educated by Tara Westover
A brief synopsis: This book is a memoir about Tara’s life. A daughter of a small family in Idaho, whose family lacks in education. It’s a story about life, survival, and freedom.
Not knowing for certain, but refusing to give way to those who claim certainty, was a privilege I had never allowed myself. My life was narrated for me by others. Their voices were forceful, emphatic, absolute. It has never occurred to me that my voice might be as strong as theirs. -Tara Westover, Educated
So, this was the first-ever nonfiction book that I actually finished, and I love it. This book was beautifully written and so powerful in a lot of aspects. All of the struggle, the journey to became educated, was extraordinary. This book portrays feminism, mental health issues, how the ability of a person to perceive an external reality could have a big impact on others, and the importance of education.
It’s horrible. The abuse, and how she rationalized it to herself. How her mind creates a false memory in order for her to endure it all, to survive. It was brave. For her to break the chain of society. To pursue her dreams, to go to college, even when she had never been to school. To refuse to be a daughter her father raised.
Educated opened my eyes, even when some were overwhelming. It gave me perspective and understanding. I give this book a 5/5 stars, and I think people should read this book at least once in their life.
